Nellikai sadam is a delicious rice flavored with gooseberry and mild spices. Gooseberries which are also known as amla or nellikai and have great health benefits. It is extremely good for hair, eyes and skin. It even helps to control cholesterol.
I prepared an easy one-pot rice with deliciousness of gooseberry and coconut with mild spices. It was loved by my family and I enjoyed it with some papadams. So, sharing another easy recipe to use this wonder fruit. You can watch this quick video to make it:

Nellikai Sadam - Gooseberry Flavored Rice
- Raw rice - 1 cups
- Grated Amla/Nellikai/Gooseberry - 1/2 cup
- Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Channa dal/Bengal Gram – 1 tbsp
- Urad dal/white lentil – 2 tsp
- Red chillies – 2
- Green chillies -2 finely chopped
- Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves – 1 sprig
- Ginger finely chopped – 2 tsp optional
- Asafoetida – 1/8 tsp
- Peanuts - a fistful
- salt to taste
- vegetable oil - 1 tbsp
Pressure cook rice with 2+1/4 cup of water. Spread the cooked rice in a plate a and keep it aside.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and a pinch of asafoetida. When they crackle, add channa dal, urad dal, peanuts and roast till it becomes slightly brown.
Add red chilies, green chilies, ginger and curry leaves and sauté for a few seconds.
Lower the flame and add grated gooseberry, coconut, turmeric powder and saute for 2 minutes.
Add cooked rice and salt and mix gently.
Transfer it into a serving bowl and and serve it hot with some Raita and papadams.
