Manathakkali Vathal is a sun dried version of the green berries of the Manathakkali plant.It is called ‘Black Night Shade’ in English. Manathakkali Vathal Kuzhambu is a famous vegetarian side dish from Southern, India and it is usually served with some rice and appalams. I have used home made spices to make this kuzhumbu.

Ingredients
- Manathakkali Vatthal /Black nightshade - 2 tbsp
- Tamarind - a lemon sized ball
- Sambar Powder - 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
- Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Red chillies - 2
- Curry Leaves- 1 sprig
- Grated Jaggery - 1 tbsp
- salt to taste
- Sesame Oil/Cooking Oil - 2 tbsp
Instructions

Soak the tamarind for 15 minutes in some warm water. Now strain the water in a separate bowl by removing the pulp.

Heat 1 tsp oil in a frying pan and add Manathakkali Vatthal. Saute them for a minute on low flame, remove from the pan and keep it aside in a bowl.

Heat 1 tbsp oil in the same pan and add mustard seeds. When they crackle, add fenugreek seeds and asafoetida, red chillies and curry leaves and saute for few seconds.

Add sambar powder and saute for few seconds. Add tamarind water and mix it well.

Add manathakkali, salt to taste, 1 cup of water, grated jaggery and bring it to boil.

Lower the flame and let it simmer until the gravy thickens and lets out oil.

Remove from stove, transfer it into a serving bowl and serve it with hot rice along with chips and papad.
