Dal served with Jeera Rice and some papads and pickles is one my favorite combos. Its mango season and I decided to make some dal sweetened with ripe mangoes. Usually “aam ki dal” is made with raw mango but I thought of using ripe mangoes which added a nice flavor and sweetness which was loved by my little one. You can also serve it as a lentil soup.
Ingredients:
Toor Dal/yellow split pigeon peas – 1 cup
Ripe Mango – 1 cup (peeled and chopped)Jeera/Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Green Chillies – 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chilly powder – 1/2 tsp
Kasoori Methi/Dried fenugreek leaves – 1 tsp
Coriander Leaves for garnishing
Salt to taste
Cooking Oil/Ghee – 1 tbsp
Green Chillies – 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chilly powder – 1/2 tsp
Kasoori Methi/Dried fenugreek leaves – 1 tsp
Coriander Leaves for garnishing
Salt to taste
Cooking Oil/Ghee – 1 tbsp
Method:
1) Wash and soak dal and in some water for 30 minutes.
2) In a pressure cooker add soaked lentils with 2 and 1/2 cups of water, chopped mangoes and turmeric powder.
3) When the water starts boiling, close the cooker and give 2-3 whistles or till lentils are soft and cooked properly. Mash the dal and keep it aside.
4) Add oil in a pan and when the oil is warm add cumin seeds and green chillies and saute over low flame till cumin seeds crackle.
5) Now add cooked lentil with water, red chilly powder, salt to taste and mix it well. Add more water if you feel its too thick. Let it simmer on low flame for few minutes and keep stirring in between.
6) Now add dried fenugreek leaves and give a final stir. Transfer in a bowl and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve it hot with some rice or roti.
