Aadi Perukku is a very special festival in South India celebrated on the 18th day of Aadi Tamil month. Aadi month is considered to be the monsoon month and the water level rises in rivers and lakes. So, people worship wells, water tanks, rivers and lakes near to their house. Many people prepare lunch which is a combination of 5 variety rice and pack it for whole family. The whole family spends time near lakeside or riverside and enjoys it like a picnic day. I also prepared lunch with Coconut rice, lemon rice, curd rice, tamarind rice and sakkarai pongal served with paruppu vadai and appalam.
Perukku means “flourish”. So, farmers sow the seeds today in belief that the farm will flourish with good produce. Cauvery river is mainly worshipped on this day as it is the main source of water in Tamil Nadu. Aadi perukku lunch is special too as everyone loves these variety rice.
