I’m basically a tea drinker and usually prefer to have some ginger tea. I also keep a stack of some chai masala ready as my husband especially loves it. It adds a nice aroma to the tea and very refreshing. It is made by using different herbs which are very good for health. So, sharing an easy recipe today to make some tea masala powder.

Chai Masala Powder / tea masala
Author: Priya Shiva
Prep time: 5 mins
Cook time: 30 mins
Total time: 35 mins
Ingredients
  • Cinnamon – 2 tbsp (broken into small pieces)
  • Cloves – 1 tsp
  • Black peppercorns – 2 tbsp
  • Green Cardamom – 3 tbsp
  • Dried tulsi leaves / holy basil – 2 tbsp
  • Mace – 1 tbsp
  • Grated Nutmeg – 1 tsp
  • Dried ginger powder – 3 tbsp
Instructions
  1. Dry roast the cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, cardamom for few minutes on low flame. Keep it aside and let it cool down completely.
  2. Add nutmeg, mace, dried tulsi leaves and ginger powder along with roasted ingredients and grind to make a coarse powder.
  3. Spread the content on a newspaper and leave it aside for 30 minutes.
  4. Store it in a cool place in a air-tight container. You can use a generous pinch of powder to make a flavoured tea.
Notes
You can add the powdered masala with 3/4 cup water, tea leaves, 1/4 cup milk and sugar as per taste in a kettle and bring the mixture to a boil. Strain and serve piping hot.

We moved to Canada from England when I was eight years old, but I never lost my love of tea. It's always great to learn new ways to enjoy something you already love. Thanks for the recipe!

What does Masala mean in your language? I put organic cinnamon in my coffee everyday.

I've never had masala chai before. I'm so use to simply buying my tea from the store. Will have to try making this recipe!
