  • Urad dal / White lentil - 1 cup
  • Rice Flour - 1 tbsp
  • Chopped green chillies - 1 tbsp
  • Black pepper corn - 1 tbsp
  • Ginger - 1 tbsp chopped
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Salt to taste
  • Asafoetida/hing - 1/4 tsp
  • Vegetable Oil for deep frying


  1. Clean and soak Urad dal in water for 3 hours. Drain the water and keep it aside.
  2. Add urad dal, ginger, few curry leaves and grind it to make a smooth paste. Add very little water to grind and then transfer the batter into a bowl.
  3. Add salt to taste, rice flour, black pepper corn and green chilies and mix it well.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan. When oil is warm, lower the flame.
  5. Wet your hands and take a small portion of batter in your hand. Drop it into the oil carefully. You can also use a spoon to drop the batter into the warm oil.
  6. Deep fry in oil on low to medium flame till it turns golden brown.
  7. Serve it hot with some coconut chutney.
