  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Freshly Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Urad dal/white lentil – 1 tsp
  • Chana Dal/Split chickpeas - 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Chopped green chillies – 1 tbsp
  • Red chilli - 2
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • Idhayam Sesame Oil – 2 tbsp


  1. Clean and soak rice for 1 hour. Grind it with some water to make a smooth batter.

  2. Heat a heavy bottom pan on low flame and add this rice batter in it.

  3. Add a pinch of salt, 1 tbsp Sesame oil and stir continuously till it combines and forms a dough. Let it cool down.

  4. Grease your hand with sesame oil and knead the dough. Pinch the dough and start making small balls out of it.

  5. Take an idli plate and place a wet cloth over it. Place all the small balls on it and steam it for 5 minutes.
  6. Heat a frying pan and add 1 tbsp sesame oil.

  7. Add a pinch of asafoetida and mustard seeds.
  8. When the mustard seeds crackle, add chana dal, red chilli and urad dal and saute.
  9. Lower the flame and add curry leaves, chopped green chilies and saute for few seconds.
  10. Now add grated coconut and saute for a minute.
  11. Finally add the steamed balls and mix well. Remove from the flame and serve.
