Pumpkin Lentil Soup / Kaddu Dal Shorba

Flavourful, comforting red lentil soup with a combination of sweetness from pumpkins!

  • Masoor Dal / Split Red lentil - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 1 (finely chopped)
  • Pumpkin - 1 cup (chopped)
  • Tomatoes - 2 (chopped)
  • Garlic cloves - 2 (chopped)
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1/2 tsp
  • Vegetable Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Cilantro/Coriander leaves for garnishing


  1. Heat oil in a frying pan and sauté onions till translucent.

  2. Stir in garlic.

  3. Now add chopped pumpkin and tomatoes and stir for 2 minutes. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and garam masala and quickly stir it.

  4. Transfer this into a pressure cooker along with lentil.

  5. Add 1 cup of water and pressure cook till lentils are nicely cooked. Let it cool down and blend it nicely using blender.

  6. Heat it in a pan and add salt to taste. Add more water if its too thick. Serve it hot garnished with coriander leaves.

Recipe Notes

I have not added any cream to keep it light and healthy but you can add some cream as per your preference before serving.
