Raw Tomato Kootu

Kootu is a popular dish from South India prepared by adding vegetables with lentils and cooked in coconut gravy. This is another version of kootu where I have used raw tomatoes dish and served with steamed rice, tomato, sambar etc..

Ingredients

  • Raw tomatoes - 4
  • Potatoes - 2
  • Moong dal dhuli/husked Green gram skinned - 1/4 cup
  • Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Freshly Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Green chillies - 2
  • Red chillies - 2
  • Urad dal/white lentil - 1 tbsp
  • Coconut oil - 1 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Clean husked green gram in water few times. Drain the water. Pressure cook with 1/2 cup of water.

  2. Chop tomatoes. Peel and chop potatoes. Add 1 tsp oil in a sauce pan and add vegetables. Add 1/4 cup of water and let it cook till vegetables are soft and cooked.

  3. Grind coconut with green chillies and cumin seeds with little water to make a paste.

  4. Add Cooked lentils and coconut paste in the sauce pan. Mix well and adjust the consistency by adding a little water. This curry is thick. So, do not add too much of water.

  5. Add add turmeric powder, mix and let the curry simmer for few minutes.

  6. Add salt to taste and mix well and remove from flame.

  7. Heat oil in a small frying pan. Add mustard seeds and white lentil.

  8. Once mustard seeds crackle, add red chillies and curry leaves.

  9. Add this tempering over the curry and serve.
