After being continuously on the road for the last two weekends, we thought we should attend to some of our urban chores at least this weekend. However when the travel bug bites, it bites you big. As we were oscillating between “to travel or not” we got an opportunity to visit Masinagudi and “Casa Deep Woods” would be the home for the next two days. Who could resist the call of the deep woods? Definitely not us…
Masinagudi is one of our favorite quick drive destinations from Bangalore and it takes us through two of the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries. Bandipur sanctuary on the Karnataka side and Mudumalai wild life sanctuary on the Tamil Nadu side . We have done this route a few times and it has always been a wonderful route to take with abundant spotting of animals. Apart from the routine sightings like, bison, deer, monkey and elephants , we did sight a sloth bear and a sambar deer this time. A few clicks enroute…..
From Mudumalai, at a distance of 7 kms is Masinagudi. Within a few minutes we were looking for directions to “Casa Deep Woods”. An auto driver rightly pointed us to the right in the next 200 yards and it straight led us to Casa Deep Woods Jungle Retreat. Tucked away a few yards from the main access road, what appeared to be a narrow entry, led us to a quaint small parking lot.
From here on the story begins…and as we alighted from the car we stood transfixed at a beautiful portico with some aesthetically designed wooden pillars , a tall ceiling with a few lamp shades made out of bamboo and some beautiful hand carvings that are splattered around the entry for good effect. It looks even more beautiful in the night..
The portico led us to the dining area which was an architectural marvel and the dining area just opens up into a vast resort with Bamboo trees all over. It was love at first sight and fully green sight dampened our dry city eyes and heart to the moon and back.
We were warmly welcomed with a welcome drink and were shown into our room and within a few minutes got a call from the owner enquiring about our journey and if we felt comfortable. We decided to just catch up with him quickly and walked back to the dining area to say a hello ….
In the dining area we were greeted by a simple but elegant looking man in his fifties. He shook his hands and said , “Hi I am Dev Reddy”, in a soft but resonating voice. What we thought would be just an exchange of pleasantries turned out to be the most interesting conversation we have had in the last few years. Mr. Reddy is an architect by qualification (and now we knew the secret behind the architectural elegance of the resort) and was leading a very competitive practice in the city. However, the urban life and its mundane routines, coupled with noise and loud traffic, made him move to Masinagudi and set up “casa deep woods”. His philosophy of quitting the city life and moving closer to nature will be something that every urban man would connect with. We could easily see the passion with which he has designed everything within the resort. He has put the abundant bamboos to good use, by designing everything from a soap holder to shampoo dispenser in Bamboo.
As we were just pondering how someone could make this move from city, we realized it would not have been possible without good familial support and then bang came in Mrs. Nagina Reddy. An ardent animal lover, a nature conservationist by heart and finally a lady with a lot of style would be the apt description of Mrs. Reddy. She firmly believes in co-existing with the wild and champions the cause of animal welfare and forest conservation, and won’t hesitate to do anything to make sure the animals around her are not harmed. The Reddy’s complement each other and were a wonderful host over the next two days. We did have many more intellectually stimulating conversation over the next two days.
Casa Deep Woods
After eulogizing the Reddy’s we feel it’s right time to move on to what’s on offer at Casa deep woods. Bamboo is the theme of casa deep woods, set amidst a bamboo forest, the sight of green well grown bamboos elevates the feel of the deep woods. These bamboos do not interfere with the flow of the property. There are around 20 well-appointed cottages in the property. The cottages are cozy and are again well built. The linens are cleanest, the towels are the whitest and the toiletries offered are definitely premium..
Just behind the property is a small stream of water and if you are lucky you could probably spot a deer or an elephant.
As we were exploring the property we realized how much potential this property has for it to be one of the best places to stay in Masinagudi. This property has been a host to three weddings till date and the fourth wedding is on the cards in the month of September. The greenery and the aesthetics of the property definitely makes it an undisputed first choice for being a wedding destination. With adequate rooms and a more than sufficient banquet hall coupled with the “we would do anything for you” spirit of the Reddy’s, casa deep woods will be fondly remembered as “the place we got married” in the years to come by many couples.
This property is a photographer’s delight and a models dream come true. The location is so serene and cut off but well connected to your soul…
Casa deep woods also has the flexibility of letting you be yourself. Just pick a novel and sit in the patio, watch the birds fly and hear them chirp and you would need nothing else more than that for the day to calm you down. The best time to visit Casa Deep woods to unwind are the week days as weekends get crowded and more noisy.
In fact during the months of November to March, many migratory birds make casa deep woods their home and this is a place not to be missed if you love bird watching.
The open spaces allow you to practice your stretches, or play a little bit of badminton, there are a lot of indoor games too and you could even test your vocal chords with the karoke on offer. There is an on demand bonfire available and the food to satiate your taste buds. Our kid Arhaan decided to enjoy playing cricket there..
If you are a pet lover , you will be amazed at the cute dogs around the property . We petted the Russian wolf hound ( a rarity in this part of the world) and what a sweetheart he is !!!! They call him Cezario….
You can also visit the nearby Elephant feeding camp, enjoy a jungle safari or drive till Ooty while you stay at Casa deep woods. Before we wind up with the post we would like to give a shout out to the “wilderness yoga retreat” that’s coming up between the September 4th and 8th . This is a residential course with well-trained yoga gurus and we assure you this would be one of its kind experience.
The wilderness yoga will also come with a well-balanced diet that suits the yogic body and mind. Do get in touch with casa deep woods for more details and detox yourself over the course of the yoga retreat. Click here to contact them and book your stay.
Enjoy the stay in the wilderness but always remember that we are the guests in the wild wood and the wildlife owns the jungle. So as long as we do not disturb them, the fun is unlimited. So until we get our next calling, signing off from the woods..
